Few people know of him . . . yet conceivably hundreds
of millions of people are alive because of him.

Stanislav Petrov wears his military uniform in this photograph which appeared in the American magazine People June 14, 1999. He had been a promising young officer, a lieutenant colonel, many times decorated. His military career ended prematurely as a result of the false nuclear missile attack warning in September 1983.
